About Manuka honey
Streamland Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand from the Manuka tree (leptospermum scoparium). Manuka tree products have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes, and the honey derived from the flowers of these trees, in particular, has been prized for its health-promoting properties.

What makes Manuka honey different?
Most honeys are in some way antibacterial. Generally, this antibacterial activity is almost exclusively derived from Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and is referred to as Peroxide Activity or PA. This is created from the activity of the enzyme Glucose Oxidase which is severely affected and reduced by light and heat. What sets Manuka honey apart is the antibacterial activity above and beyond that of so-called regular honeys. This antibacterial activity is derived from Non Peroxide Activity (NPA) which is more stable than PA and is not affected by light and/or moderate heat.

How does this benefit you?
There is significant published reasearched that attests to the benefits of active Manuka honey. This research has shown that active Manuka honey has high levels of antimicrobial action against a broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi. In particular Manuka honey can be effective in wound healing, direct application resulting, in cited examples, in rapid and clean healing of skin wounds. With other research indicating a range of health benefits, from aiding resistance to a variety of bugs to assisting in digestive health, the best way of understanding this is via the UMF, the Unique Manuka Factor.

Unique Manuka Factor
UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) is a brand owned by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) who are responsible for protecting, researching and promoting New Zealand honey industry.
UMF provides a measurement scale of the non-peroxide activity relative to phenol. The UMF rating on the label refers to the equivalent of a percentage of phenol within the honey itself.

Phenol is associated with the antiseptic qualities of Manuka honey; a higher UMF rating tends to indicate higher antibacterial levels.

The UMFHA via contractor Asure Quality Ltd audits every New Zealand facility supplying honey to ensure they are compliant to the UMF quality standard production requirements.

Uniquely Manuka
What the UMF does is to differentiate Manuka honey from other forms of honey: UMF levels measure, in a way, Manuka uniqueness.
The UMFHA via contractor Asure Quality Ltd audits every New Zealand facility supplying honey to ensure they are compliant to the UMF quality standard production requirements. Asure Quality Ltd is an independent organisation skilled in audit trails, particularly in honey and bee-related products, with many years of experience. Streamland applied and received the right to use UMF on the labels of our Manuka honey; ongoing and auditing independent testing of our products ensure we can retain and display this all-important certification.

Asure Quality also confirms that each product has been tested to the required standard under the licence. Guidelines are given to all licence holders to ensure whatever claims we make in relation to our honey can be substantiated. The Association regularly audits to these guidelines. Provenance is critical in Manuka honey manufacture. Samples from marketplace are regularly checked to ensure they are from the stated origin. This helps to protect consumers and provide the ultimate assurance traceability.
